THE BLURB

I am a UK based Designer and Supervising Art Director having worked in the Film and Television industry for the last 15 years. I have been fortunate over the span of my career so far to have worked on an interesting range of projects, from period, contemporary and science fiction, each one with their own challenges and unique settings.  The varied nature of this industry drives and fuels the creative desire and interest each project brings. Please take a look at some of the work produced for these productions over on the front page.

The majority of my experience has been that of a Draughtsman, Set Designer, Art Director and Supervising Art Director. From a quick pencil sketch on paper, to research, to fast and detailed 3D models, concept art, and technical drawings I have experience in creating and translating Directors ideas through from concept to construction. All under the usual time and budget constraints! From this point it is then the ability to problem solve, refine designs and details, logistical and practical problems and then pass on this information to other departments: construction, fabrication, set decorating and dressing, VFX, SFX, scenic artists and lighting to name a few.

The ability to create detailed, thought out designs early on means we can foresee problems later down the line and most importantly means we can put the money where we are going to see it. As a keen photographer the understanding of composition, focal lengths and lighting is a strong help in understanding our own use of a camera and designing our sets to their maximum potential.

A good understanding of construction techniques means the commucation can be concise and efficient and allow the flow of information to continue as the sets are built, from the smallest of details to the grander picture, maintaining the authenticity and ultimately the vision of the show as much as possible. The ability to communicate directly with carpenters, sculpters and scenic artists helps with this, responding to problems on the fly and encouraging a well thought out solution.

When not delving into the past, present and future when creating our filmic realities, I tend to find myself with a camera, sketchbook or paintbrush in hand out and about whenever possible. dagaggle.co.uk is a photoblog to encourage this. Please take a look.
